Home Town: Advocate Harbour, Cumberland County

Biography: Freddie Cameron was born on November 11, 1886 in Advocate Harbour, Nova Scotia. He was one of Canada’s most outstanding marathon runners and at one point in his career, he held the title of North American Long Distance Champion.

For many years, Cameron was the Maritime Champion of the five-mile-run. He held the record for the Halifax Herald ten-mile road race and was the winner of the 14th annual Boston Marathon in 1910. Freddie turned professional in 1911.

The highlight of Cameron’s career was his 1910 win at the Boston Marathon. According to the press, Cameron was given little chance of winning the race because he had never before run in any event that was longer than ten miles. Cameron definitely did not disappoint his fans from Nova Scotia! Not only did he win, but he led from start to finish and became only the second Nova Scotian to win the Boston Marathon. His time was two hours, 28 minutes and 52 seconds.

Cameron continued to run as a professional until his retirement from the sport in 1919. During his career he amassed over 160 trophies and awards. Freddie Cameron is an Original Inductee into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame.
