Biography: April 29, 1975, was the day that the world found out Nancy Garapick was a swimmer. The 13-year-old Haligonian established a world record in the 200-metre backstroke at the Eastern Canadian Championships in Brantford, Ontario. The time of 2:16:33 was almost one second under the old mark and after that, it was nothing but success.

Garapick won both silver and bronze medals at the 1975 World Championship and two bronze medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She was a member of the Canadian National Swim Team for eight years and was in attendance at the Commonwealth and Pan American Games. She was the Canadian record holder in the butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley.

She was also the holder of several AUAA and CIAU records as a member of the Dalhousie Swim Team as well as the record holder of the NCAA 200-metre free style. Garapick was named Canada's Female Athlete of the Year in 1975. Nancy Garapick was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1986.
