SUMMARY:Sid the Kid and the Dryer Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join author Lesley Choyce and illustrator Brenda Jones for the launch of this imaginative interpretation of the history of Sidney Crosby’s famous dryer. \nThere will be refreshments\, books for purchase and signing\, and an opportunity to “meet” the dryer in real life! \nEveryone is welcome. Stop by the launch at the Hall of Fame before the Mooseheads game on November 2. \n \nAbout the book: Milton the washing machine and W. P. (Whirlpool) the dryer are being delivered to a new home in Cole Harbour\, Nova Scotia. The pair are excited to start their new jobs in the Crosby home\, and are just getting settled in to the basement when “the kid” comes home from school. Sidney straps on a pair of Rollerblades\, drags out a beat-up hockey net\, and starts to practice. Every now and then a loud carrong echoes off W. P.’s shiny white enamel as the puck misses the net\, prompting scolds from Sidney’s mother upstairs. \nEventually\, the poor dryer needs to be replaced; it’s missing knobs and covered in dents. W. P. doesn’t want to go\, and it’s up to Sidney to convince his dad that sometimes\, being reminded of your mistakes is a good thing. \nAn imaginative interpretation of the history of Sidney Crosby’s famous dryer (now a popular attraction at the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame)\, paired with vibrant artwork from award-winning illustrator Brenda Jones\, Sid the Kid and the Dryer will have young readers and sports fans cheering from the sidelines. \n

SUMMARY:Distinction Earned: Cape Breton Boxing’s Golden Era
DESCRIPTION:Free Film Screening at the Hall of Fame! \nDistinction Earned: Cape Breton Boxing’s Golden Era (20min 40sec)\nDirected by Charles Currie\nWritten by Paul MacDougall\, Charles Currie and Allan MacDonald \nSynopsis:\nCape Breton Island was once a boxing mecca producing multiple Canadian champions including NSSHF alumni George “Rockabye” Ross\, Tyrone Gardiner and Blair Richardson. This documentary\,  based on Paul MacDougall’s book Distinction Earned: Cape Breton’s Boxing Legends\, 1946 – 1970\, uses interviews\, archival footage\, photographs and cartoons to transport the viewer to industrial Cape Breton in the mid-20th century\, where boxing flourished against the industrial backdrop of the steel plant and coal mines. The film explores the role of the trainers (Johnny Nemis\, John Cechetto)\, the venue (Venetian Gardens)\, the cutman (Rudy Plichie)\, the promoter (Gussie MacLellan)\, the champions (George Ross\, Tyrone Gardiner\, Blair Richardson) and the fans. All interconnected\, it was their passion and drive that took boxing  from the backrooms of grocery stores all the way to Madison Square Garden. Distinction Earned is  a grassroots working-class success story and a celebration of a time when Nova Scotians were among the best athletes in the world. \nJoin us for a free screening and chat with the director before the Halifax Mooseheads face off against Cape Breton on October 29. Open to the public.
