For the 1964-65 season, coach Stu Aberdeen saw the return of seasoned veterans for what looked like a great year. But injuries riddled the starting five. The loss of four non-conference games in a row painted a grim picture. Each game was a struggle, with Aberdeen sometimes only having six men dressed to play. This seemed to strengthen the team”s determination as they went on to win the Maritime championship over St. F.X. in overtime.
The Axemen squeaked by Carleton (83-79) and were pitted against the Windsor Lancers in the final. A see-saw battle saw the Axemen prevail 92-83 in overtime to bring home the National championship for the first time ever to a Nova Scotia school.
Members of the team were: Stu Aberdeen (coach), Eugene Chatterton (assistant coach), Jim Clark, Brian Heaney, Steve Konchalski, Andy Kranack, James Logue (assistant coach), Scott Lumsden, Don Meuse (manager), Peter Pike, Dave Rode (captain), Mike Trask (manager), Ward White.
