Jim Clark, Brian Heaney, Steve Konchalski, Andy Kranack, Scott Lumsden, Pete Pike, Dave Rode and Ward White formed the team that put Acadia University on the map as national intercollegiate champions in 1965.
Coach Stu Aberdeen saw the return of the seasoned veterans for what looked like a great year. But injuries riddled the starting five. The loss of four non-conference games in a row painted a grim picture. Each conference game was a struggle in itself. Several times Aberdeen had only six men dressed to play. This seemed to strengthen the team’s determination. A sudden death playoff win against St. Francis Xavier earned Acadia its fourth Maritime championship in five Years. At the Nationals in Halifax, the team squake by Carleton for a 83-79 win. The final was a classic that pitted Acadia against the Windsor Lancers. This cliff hanger saw the lead change hands seventeen times. An overtime surge nailed the National Championship for Acadia at 92-83 and brought this title home for the “first-ever” time to a Nova Scotia school.
Members of the team were: Stu Aberdeen (coach), Eugene Chatterton (assistant coach), Jim Clark, Brian Heaney, Steve Konchalski, Andy Kranack, James Logue (assistant coach), Scott Lumsden, Don Meuse (manager), Peter Pike, Dave Rode (captain), Mike Trask (manager), Ward White.
