Benny Woodworth was born in 1876 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and played amateur baseball in the early 1900s. He was an excellent right-handed pitcher. A versatile athlete, Woodworth was an excellent hockey player and a star member of the Halifax Crescents Hockey Club. He played football with various YMCA teams, was a leading quoiter with the North West Arm Club, a lawn bowler with the Wanderers Club and a curler with the Mayflower Club. His name became synonymous with good sportsmanship and all-round athlete.
