Just by mentioning the sport of harness racing one of the first names that comes to mind is the great David Pinkney. Since 1945 he has won over 3,265 races in the Maritimes and his purse earnings stand at over $2.4 million. Pinkney was the first driver in Maritime history to win over $1 million in purse money. This was an impressive feat as the purse money was earned during a time when prize money for the sport wasn’t very substantial.
This seven-time Maritime Driving Champion has held over 12 track records and was the first to post the sub 2:00 mile in Nova Scotia and the sub 1:55 mile in the Maritimes. Pinkney has been the District 10 Representative for the United States Trotting Association for five years and was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2001.
David passed away on October 26th, 2008.
