Fritz Schaefer was from Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1905, he ran the high school 220-yard dash in 23.4 seconds at the Nova Scotia Schoolboy Track and Field Championships, a time that was quicker than the men’s open 220-yard time.

By 1908, Schaefer was quickly gaining recognition as an up-and-coming track star, running the 100-yard dash in 10.0 seconds at the Wanderers Grounds. His performance was so impressive he beat Ontario sprinter Bobby Kerr, who had just won both gold and bronze medals at the Olympics in London, England.

Schaefer went on to star in several important sprinting races in the 1920’s. He was the Canadian 100-yard champion in the 1920’s and also held the 100-yard record for many years. Fritz Schaefer is an Original Sport Hall of Fame Inductee.
