George Ross Harper, a native of New Glasgow, first made the Bisley Team as a high school cadet in 1955. The Bisley is a Commonwealth target shooting competition in which the best shooters in the Commonwealth compete. In order to qualify, Harper had to compete locally against sixty shooters, of which 12 would qualify for the Canadian competition in Ottawa. The Ottawa shoot would select 18 shooters from a field of five hundred.
Against these odds, George Harper qualified eight times, 1955, 1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1972, 1973 and 1975. George Ross Harper was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1982.
