Gordon (Gordie) Mont was known as Mr. Baseball in Truro and was a long-time supporter and volunteer in numerous sports activities.

A member of the 1946 Nova Scotia baseball champions the Truro Bearcats, Mont started playing baseball in 1938 and, forty years later, played his last game at the age of 58. He enlisted in the Canadian army with the Halifax Rifles in 1940 and was stationed at Gander, Newfoundland. While at Gander, he assisted in organizing an army team and acted as player-coach in competition against other service teams. While in action in Italy, he coached the only Canadian army baseball team.

In 1958, when the H&D League folded, Mont organized senior baseball in Truro and took on player-coach duties. Always interested in the youth of his home community, he conducted baseball schools for the players of Truro. For half a century, Mont organized and acted as coach or player-coach on twelve teams, bringing championship titles to Truro. He was named Truro’s citizen of the year in 1968.
