Hector Edward “Dodger” MacDonald was born in Halifax, but became a famous baseball player for the Amherst Ramblers in the 1900s. Joining the Ramblers in 1901, he helped the team win the Maritime Senior Championship in 1906. On numerous occasions the shortstop made outstanding plays when heavy hitters propelled the ball through the infield. Hector’s exceptional talents were noted in the recap of a 1920 provincial semi-finals game between the Ramblers and the Halifax Crescents

Later, his skills saw him join the Cape Breton Professional Baseball League where he continued to excel. After retirement from his career as an electrician in 1945, Hector continued to give back to the baseball community as an umpire and coach.

When he passed away at the age of 86, Hector was the last surviving member of the 1906 Amherst Ramblers champion baseball team. He is an original Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame inductee.
