Halifax native Jack Gray is known as “Mr. Softball”. Jack Gray has had softball in his blood for 30 years. After a very short career as a player, Jack, wanting to remain involved, took over management and administration.
Jack played sports for a few years while attending Oxford Street School, but became involved in coaching immediately after leaving school. After a few years in secondary administrative positions, Gray became involved with the Nova Scotia Softball Association in 1948 and was named president in 1949. When he took over there were only 34 teams in three classifications. When he retired in 1977 there were close to 360 teams in 22 classifications, totaling 5,400 players.
Jack Gray travelled over 200,000 miles in support of softball. When asked how he found the time he responded that everyone was dedicated to something and he just happened to be dedicated to softball.
