John Myketyn of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia will always be remembered as one of the best hockey and baseball players this province has ever produced. He was a standout member of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men hockey team while they won four straight college championships in the 1940’s. He was a star defenceman in the Maritime Big Four League delivering bruising body checks for the Saint John Beavers.
He spent three years with the Sydney Millionaires when they were the kings of the senior hockey circuit, winning Nova Scotia and Maritime championships while advancing along the Allan Cup trail. When the Big Four League amalgamated to form the Maritime Major League he returned to his hometown of Glace Bay to play for the Miners. Myketyn was every bit as effective on the baseball diamond where his all-around play made him a valued member of senior teams in the then import-laden Cape Breton Senior and Halifax and District Leagues. John Myketyn was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1991.
John passed away on January 25th, 1996.
