Mike Lynch was born in Fergusons Cove in 1870. He was one of the world’s greatest oarsmen, and along with his brother Mark was part of the world’s fastest professional doubles team at the turn of the century. On September 22, 1898, on the Northwest Arm, the Lynch brothers rowed to victory over the Dunan and Rice duo, the world’s most famous doubles team from Toronto, Ontario.
The Lynch brothers held a substantial lead over the entire three-mile course and won a hands-down victory. Amazingly, after the race, the pair displayed their true athletic stamina by rowing home to Fergusons Cove. Mike Lynch later worked on the Halifax Waterfront as a driver’s attendant. He passed away on May 5, 1953, at the age of 83. He is an Original Sport Hall of Fame Inductee.
