Born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Rita Lohnes dominated the Nova Scotia competitive golf scene for nine years, beginning in 1951. Playing out of the Bluenose Golf Club she won the Nova Scotia Junior, Nova Scotia Amateur, Maritime Junior, and Maritime Amateur at the age of sixteen.

Lohnes won a total of seventeen Provincial or Maritime championships during her nine years of competition. She was also on a team representing Nova Scotia each of those years. In 1956 Lohnes was the winner of the Canadian Open, First Flight Consolation, and ranked third out of all juniors in Canada. She maintained the ranking through her entire career. Rita Lohnes was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1982.
