Stan “Chook” Maxwell was one of the great athletes to come out of Truro, Nova Scotia. He was one of the first black professional hockey players, starring for many years in the high minor leagues. Maxwell played with the Quebec Aces in the Quebec Hockey League and led the scoring in the International Hockey League three times with the Toledo Blades.

Maxwell was also an outstanding baseball player starring for five years on the Truro Bearcats of the Halifax and District League, always being among the top hitters. Stan Maxwell was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1980.
