“This town is basketball mad.” (The Halifax Herald, April 22, 1930) This statement was the result of one of the biggest basketball contests Wolfville will ever know. The 1930 Acadia Basketball Team was to play the New Westminster
Adanacs in the Dominion finals, the first time a basketball team from this province had had a representative in a national final. After an exciting display of talent from both teams, Acadia went down to defeat in a two game total point series, 60-40.
To advance to this prestigious championship, the Acadia hoopsters had to first defeat Dalhousie for the Provincial title, the Saint John Trojans basketball club for the Maritime Championship, and the Windsor (Ontario) Alumni for the Eastern crown. After thrilling record crowds for these contests, Acadia advanced to the national championship.
Team members were: Louie Davidson (captain), S.B. (Bancroft) Davis, Vern Eville, Bobby Fraser, Fred Galbraith, Charles (Bud) Harlow (manager), Bill Matthews, Duncan (Dunc) McKenzie, Terry Osborne (coach), Carl (Trax) Trask (assistant manager).
