In only its second year of existence, the 1981 Fisherman’s Market Midget Boys Fast Pitch Softball Team became the first midget boys’ team from Nova Scotia to win a gold medal at a Canadian Fastball Championship. The team joined the Metro “C” League to ensure they would play against top quality teams on a regular basis. The team also played in intermediate tournaments whenever possible. Playing at this level prepared them for the provincial and national championships.

After going undefeated in the provincial play-downs, the players had to help raise $10,000 to compete in the Canadian Championship, held in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Once there, they went 4-0 in the qualifying round and then split the first two games of the elimination round. After that the team didn’t miss a beat, winning the next three games to take home the gold. The team offered graduates from the Highland Park Minor Softball Program an opportunity to continue playing and opened the door for more minor ball programs in the Halifax area.

Team members included: Richard Connolly, Dennis Flemming, Robert Forbes, Allie Hart, Mark Hartlen, Stan Hennigar Jr., Stan Hennigar Sr. (coach), Richard Jordan, Strat Kane, Shawn Kelly, Danny Lawson, Roy MacNeil (coach), Paul Mason, Randy McQuade, Mike Miller, Konstance Nikolopoulos, Mark Perry (manager), Steve Pottie, Darrell Tingley (coach), Duane Tingley, Wendell Young.
