Sonny MacDonald, a native of Trenton, Nova Scotia, is considered to be among the top Maritime goaltenders and one of Pictou County’s finest athletes. For two straight years in the Big Four Hockey League, MacDonald, who worked well under pressure, was named to the first all-star team.

His big break came in the 1936-37 hockey season when he joined New Glasgow’s senior hockey team. He became their starting goaltender the next season.

He played for the Pictou Shipyards from 1943-46, and the Truro Bearcats from 1946-47, finishing his career with the Saint John Beavers. He also received the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association’s certificate for outstanding service to minor hockey in 1967.

Sonny MacDonald was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
