Charlie and Sandy Patterson were speedskaters from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For more than 70 years the name “Patterson” was predominant in sports in the Halifax and Dartmouth area. Charlie and Sandy were stars in many sports, excelling in hockey, baseball, and running. The Pattersons were great speedskaters in 1890. That year, they captured the Maritime Speedskating Titles in the half-mile, one mile, and three-mile races, and were also the Eastern Canadian Speedskating Champions. Charlie and Sandy won so many medals throughout their careers that they didn’t have enough room to keep them all at their house, so they had to keep the “lesser” medals at the Dartmouth clubhouse where they trained. Charlie was also a star long-distance runner and a very fancy skater. He could often be seen putting on exhibitions between periods at local hockey games
