Details:

Charles “Charlie” Elbert Paul was born in Springhill on November 27, 1898. He was a brilliant left-handed pitcher that began his baseball career pitching for New Aberdeen. In one game against Dominion in 1919, he pitched 19 strikeouts. In 1920, Charlie became the pitcher for the Dominion Hawks who did not have a catcher that could handle Charlie’s pitching. Dominion recruited Ralph Hall, who was playing in Detroit, and the two together formed a faultless team. In fact, when Charlie was asked to play for St. Stephen in 1923, he would only agree if Hall came with him.

Charlie was a “strikeout” pitcher that would never back down, no matter how far ahead his team was. He was one of the greatest pitchers of his time, but unfortunately he never made it to the big leagues. Charlie Paul was tragically killed in the first Springhill mine disaster. He is an original Sport Hall of Fame inductee.
