Clarence “Coot” MacLean was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. As a child, MacLean played for the renowned 1929-1930 Caledonia Rugby Team; a team that became the Maritime Provincial Champions and the undefeated Champions of Eastern Canada. This was Caledonia’s greatest rugby team, and Hall of Famers Alex MacDonald and Sandy McMullin were two of MacLean’s teammates.

MacLean went on to star on several other senior rugby and hockey teams, and was noted for his quick and aggressive style of play in both sports. Unfortunately, MacLean was killed in the line of duty while stationed in Italy during World War II.
