Freda Wales has done much to promote sport in Nova Scotia.  A native of St. Andre Est, Quebec, but a Nova Scotian at heart, Freda Wales has done much to promote sport in our province. She is the founding member of no less than five sport associations- the Orienteering Association of Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Women’s Basketball Association, the Maritime Board of Women’s Sport Officials, the Canadian Ski Association Atlantic Division, and the Nova Scotia Camping Association.

Not only was she the prime mover in the initial stages of these organizations, but she has also offered her services to many others including the Nova Scotia Amateur Swimming Association, the Nova Scotia Royal Life Saving Society, and the Canadian Youth Hostels Association, to name but a few. While teaching at Mount St. Vincent University, she incorporated orienteering into her program, one of the first in Nova Scotia to do so. In 1970 she was presented with the Atlantic Provinces Health, Physical Education and Recreation Association Honor Award, and recently the Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Society honored her for efforts in the field.
