Hugh Townsend, a native of New Glasgow who now lives in Dartmouth, has given much of his life to sport in Nova Scotia. Starting as a youth correspondent for his hometown newspaper, he covered senior and intermediate baseball and was Maritime correspondent for The Hockey News. In addition to his reporting duties, he was official statistician of the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League, regional scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs, executive member of the Pictou County Twilight Baseball League, and president and general manager of the Stellarton Keith’s baseball team.
He is best and most widely known for his 35-year career as a sport, political, and general reporter, as well as sports editor and columnist with the Chronicle Herald. Now retired, he still writes a weekly sport column for the Herald and for New Glasgow’s Evening News. Townsend is an inductee of the Pictou County Sport Hall of Fame.
