Shelley honed his skills with the Yarmouth PeeWee, Bantam and Midget AAA hockey teams before scoring a spot on the Halifax Mooseheads as a “walk-on” player in 1994. Two years later he became team captain and led the team to within one win from a berth in the 1997 Memorial Cup. Easily the most popular player in Mooseheads history, Shelley went on to have a 14-year NHL career. He played in over 625 NHL regular season and playoff games with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the San Jose Sharks, the New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers.
