John Edward McCurdy was born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and was one of the province’s best trap shooters. After collecting a substantial amount of silverware in Canada and the United States, he returned home in 1952 and founded the Cape Breton Gun Club.

John McCurdy was elected to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1981.
