Leo “Pop” McKenna was the leader of dozens of successful St. F. X. University teams in rugby, basketball, hockey, and football. He coached intercollegiate or provincial champions in basketball (1925, 1930); rugby (1930, 1936, 1937, 1940, 1944, 1945, 1947 and 1950), and in hockey (1943, 1944 and 1948). His guidance paved the way for X-men dominance in Atlantic University sport in the 1950s through to the 1970s. Leo McKenna was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1980.
