Lyle Carter, a Brookfield, Nova Scotia native was a superstar in two sports. He was both an NHL goaltender and an All-Canadian softball player. He worked his way through the International, Eastern, Western, and American Hockey Leagues until he earned a berth as starting goaltender with the NHL California Golden Seals. He won five of his six starts before a Richard Martin slap shot caused a premature career ending injury.

Hall of Famer Jack Gray called him the best softball player in the quarter century. He won the Mainland Fastball batting title ten times. In 1971, at the Canadian Softball Championships, Carter batted .550 and was named the All-Canadian third baseman. Four times while playing for the Brookfield Elks, Carter was named an All-Canadian. Lyle Carter was elected to the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1984.
