“Mickey” MacIntyre was born on January 31, 1890 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. The “Pride of Cape Breton,” he was the greatest boxer ever produced in the area.

MacIntyre was a classy but hard-hitting welterweight, who would have been a contender for the world championship title, had he not been so reluctant to train. MacIntyre began his boxing career as a 17-year-old when he entered and won the lightweight division of an amateur boxing competition in Boston.

From there, he went on to compete in Glace Bay, Halifax, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, and Charleston, South Carolina. When MacIntyre was at the peak of his career, he held the Welterweight Championship of Canada title.

In 1912, he was awarded a newspaper decision in Winnipeg after a 12-round no-decision bout with the “Battling Nelson.” On May 1, 1913, he gained worldwide notoriety after defeating Billy Griffiths in Calgary. After this, he was said to have “one of the strongest claims in the ring for the welterweight championship of the world.”

MacIntyre fought his last match in 1914 against the Scottish Champion Johnny Connolly. The fight took place in Glace Bay and Mickey was so strong that Connolly gave up and left in the eighth round.

MacIntyre, Nova Scotia’s greatest fighter, died of pneumonia on October 2, 1922, at age 32. He is an Original Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame Inductee.
