There did not seem to be sport at which Miriam Penney did not excel. The Pleasantville resident has been involved in many sporting activities such as softball, hockey, golf, and curling. She has over a half century of enthusiasm, volunteer guidance, support, and instruction to numerous sportsmen and women.
During her teens, Penney played her first hockey game in a covered rink. She scored all the goals in a 3-0 victory over the High School Girls and scored 21 of the team’s 22 goals in the next season, assisting on the other goal.
At 15, she was already a winning pitcher on the girls softball team that never lost a game. She batted 1.000 for the entire season and was recruited for the men’s team the following year. Penny won her high school badminton championship, set a new maritime softball throwing record, and won the Maritime softball, javelin, and shot put events.
Miriam passed away on December 7th, 2006.
At 17, she won a gold medal at the Canadian track and field championships in Hamilton, Ontario. She discovered golf at the age of 25 and after just six weeks of playing, she won the Novice Division in the Nova Scotia Ladies Championship.
Penney also won the Bridgewater Club title 25 times, represented Nova Scotia eight times at Canadian Championships, was runner-up in the Provincial Championship twice and won the Nova Scotia Ladies open in 1960. Miriam Penney was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1993.
