Robert McCall, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, began his skating career in Halifax. He was the first known on the national skating scene with Halifax skater Marie McNeil. McCall and McNeil became a household name in Nova Scotia by the mid-1970’s.

In their first international competition at the 1977 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in France, they placed a remarkable third. They also won the Canadian junior title that year. In 1978 they competed at the senior level and danced to the podium, skating to bronze medals in 1978 and 1979, silver in 1980, and finally winning their first Canadian Senior Title on home ice at the Halifax Metro Centre in 1981.

In 1982, McCall teamed up with Tracy Wilson of Port Moody B.C. They danced as National Senior Champions for seven consecutive years. In their World Championship debut in 1982, in Copenhagen, they placed 10th. It was in 1983 and 1984 that they progressed and placed 6th while placing 8th at the Olympics in Sarajevo.

In 1985, they moved up to 4th at the World Championships in Tokyo. In the next three World Championships in Geneva (1986), Cincinnati (1987), and Budapest (1988) they won bronze medals. At the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, they also won the bronze medal, becoming the first Canadian ice dancing team to medal at the games.

It was in April of 1988 that Wilson and McCall turned professional and then went on to become World Professional Champions in 1989. Robert McCall was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1993.
