Sam Wareham was one of the best, if not the best, softball pitcher in Cape Breton during the 1940s, 1950s, and part of the 1960’s. His teams were always in the thick of things come playoff time. His pitching was the bane of hitters all over the Maritimes.
In the 1950’s, Wareham coached and pitched for the Glace Bay Rockets, a four-man team which combined excellent softball with entertaining antics. It was in 1952 that he pitched his team to a 10-3 win over the Halifax Shipyards and the Provincial Senior Softball Title. Wareham never used a glove during his playing days as he found them a hindrance. Sam Wareham was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 1990.
