Theresa (Trish) MacCuish was the ultimate team player and remains the most illustrious graduate of the St. Francis Xavier University women’s basketball program. Originally from Balls Creek, Cape Breton, MacCuish left the university ranks as the all-time leading scorer in CIAU (now CIS) history, amassing over 2,000 points during her five-year career.
In her inaugural season, MacCuish earned both AUAA (now AUS) and CIAU rookie of the year honours. She was named the conference’s most valuable player in her second season and was selected as an AUAA 1st team all-star each of her five seasons with the blue and white. She led the X team to its first ever AUS title in the 1996-97 season and was a four-time St. F.X. female athlete of the year. In 2006, MacCuish entered the St. F.X. Hall of Fame.
Known for her speed, agility, desire, and overall athleticism, MacCuish had a natural personality that kept younger players and senior supporters loyal during her career. Her passion for the game started when she was in Grade 7, and MacCuish became instrumental in turning the X-Women’s program into a top contender in the AUAA.
MacCuish also represented Nova Scotia at national tournaments– she was a member of the Canadian Junior National team in 1992. In addition to leading the X-Women to their first and only basketball crown in St. F.X. history, the scoring champion was part of many other firsts while playing university ball, becoming the only X-Women to ever win a major CIAU award (Rookie of the Year in 1991-92), and the sole X-Women basketball athlete to earn CIAU All-Canadian distinction. MacCuish rounded out her athletic accomplishments with equally excellent academics, obtaining two degreesa Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, and a Bachelor of Education.
After graduation, MacCuish journeyed to the United Kingdom and played professionally for six years as part of England’s National Basketball League with the London Amazons. She was named the team’s MVP at the first-ever National Basketball League all-star game in England. She now lives in Antigonish with her husband Trevor Reddick (a 2012 inductee with the champion King of Donair soccer team) and their three children.
